چکیده

Music has long been used to strengthen bonds between humans. In our research, we develop musical co-player robots with the hope that music may improve human-robot symbiosis as well. In this paper, we underline the importance of non-verbal, visual communication for ensemble synchronization at the start, during and end of a piece. We propose three cues for inter-player communication, and present a theremin-playing, singing robot that can detect them and adapt its play to a human flutist. Experiments with two naive flutists suggest that the system can recognize naturally occurring flutist gestures without requiring specialized user training. In addition, we show how the use of audio-visual aggregation can allow a robot to adapt to tempo changes quickly. keywords: entertainment robots, gesture recognition, audio-visual integration

Real-Time Audio-to-Score Alignment Using Particle Filter for Coplayer Music Robots

Our goal is to develop a coplayer music robot capable of presenting a musical expression together with humans. Although many instrument-performing robots exist, they may have difficulty playing with human performers due to the lack of the synchronization function. The robot has to follow differences in humans’ performance such as temporal fluctuations to play with human performers. We classify ...

Multimodal gesture recognition for robot musical accompaniment∗

Listening and watching are important skills for accompanists to play in time with fellow musicians. By detecting subtle visual cues and listening to other players, musicians can start together, stop together, and follow faster or slower changes in tempo. In this paper, we formalize this non-verbal language for the case of flutists, and describe how our thereminist robot accompanist system detec...

Using Music as a Turn in Conversation in a Lesson

Music is sometimes compared to language as a system of communication, however this comparison is usually at a generic formal, cultural or social level. This paper explores this analogy at the detailed level of interaction: to what extent can musical contributions act as conversational turns? We explore this question through an ethnographic study of music lessons. We describe a new transcription...

An Integrated Model of Speech to Arm Gestures Mapping in Human-Robot Interaction

In multimodal human-robot interaction (HRI), the process of communication can be established through verbal, non-verbal, and/or para-verbal cues. The linguistic literature shows that para-verbal and non-verbal communications are naturally synchronized, however the natural mechnisam of this synchronisation is still largely unexplored. This research focuses on the relation between non-verbal and ...
